Với tư cách là huấn luyện viên tạm quyền, Van Nistelrooy đã chỉ đạo Manchester United chiến thắng 5-2 trước Leicester tại Old Trafford ở Carabao Cup rạng sáng 31-10. Sau chiến thắng này, Van Nistelrooy bày tỏ nguyện vọng được tiếp tục ở lại Manchester United.
Trả lời phỏng vấn báo chí Anh, Van Nistelrooy cho biết: “Tôi ở đây để giúp đỡ, phục vụ và cống hiến hết mình cho câu lạc bộ ở mọi khả năng. Tôi mong những điều tốt nhất cho câu lạc bộ và điều đó sẽ không bao giờ thay đổi”.
Trước mắt phía Manchester United vẫn đang thương lượng với Sporting CP về việc giải phóng hợp đồng cho HLV Ruben Amorim.
Nhưng theo các báo ở Bồ Đào Nha, ông Amorim sẽ không tiếp quản Manchester United cho đến kỳ nghỉ quốc tế tiếp theo. Điều này đồng nghĩa Van Nistelrooy có thể dẫn dắt “quỷ đỏ” thêm ba trận đấu nữa, gặp: Chelsea ngày 3-11 và Leicester ngày 10-11 (tại Premier League), PAOK ngày 7-11 ở Europa League.
Van Nistelrooy hài lòng khi làm việc với vai trò của mình: “Tôi đến đây với tư cách là trợ lý để giúp Manchester United. Bây giờ trong vai trò huấn luyện viên tạm quyền, tôi vẫn sẽ cố gắng giúp đỡ đội, miễn là cần thiết. Trong tương lai ở bất kỳ cương vị nào, tôi cũng muốn tiếp tục giúp câu lạc bộ xây dựng hướng tới tương lai và đó là lý do tôi ở đây”.
Chiến thắng mới nhất của Manchester United đến từ cú đúp của Casemiro và Bruno Fernandes cùng pha lập công của Alejandro Garnacho.
Nhận xét về Casemiro, Van Nistelrooy cho biết: “Tôi rất vui mừng cho Casemiro. Cách anh ấy tập luyện, giúp đỡ đội bóng và là một tấm gương cho mọi người”.
